Abstract

Abstract

Positive and negative behaviors naturally occur in the relations between individuals in workplaces, as in every place where people live. Some of the negative behaviors encountered in workplaces are called bullying in the workplace. Workplace bullying comes out when an individual, unable to defend himself is systematically subjected to a hostile or unethical behavior of a person or a group within the organization. Attitudes and behaviors, evaluated within the scope of workplace bullying are those that affect victim and organization negatively and significantly. Some studies show that some victims are more vulnerable to bullying than others. This finding has been interpreted that individual characteristics of the employees will moderate the relationship between bullying and consequences. This study aims to examine the moderating role of belief in a just world on the relationship between workplace bullying and the mental health of employees. The sample of the study included the employees of private sector businesses in Kayseri/Turkey. The data was collected through questionnaire technique and convenience sampling method was followed. The analyzes were performed on the data of 411 employees. As a result of the analysis, both bullying against colleague and bullying against work have a negative effect on the mental health of employees. In addition, the findings reveal that individual belief in a just world and overall belief in a just world moderate the relationship between bullying against colleagues and mental health. However, belief in a just world does not significantly play a moderating role in the relationship between bullying against work and mental health.
